John Caesar

Above is a painting I completed on an old tin tray. The painting is based on a man named John Caesar. John was of African parentage and arrived in Australian in Botany Bay with the first fleet in 1788. John had been sentenced for transportation for seven years after he was found guilty of stealing 12 pounds.Upon arrival in this new colony John consistently escaped custody or attempted to escape.

John eventually escaped from authorities for the last time in December of 1795. During this period he lead a gang of fellow escapees and wanders. Thus becoming one of Australia's first bushrangers!

John was eventually shot and killed in February 1796.When I heard this guys story, I just had to do a painting of him! What a ripping yarn!
